RoboCup Junior Christchurch took place yesterday, it was a huge success with 38 very talented teams! The teams (age 5 to 15) competed in Dance, Rescue, and Soccer competitions with their robots- mainly built from Lego Mindstorm NXT kits. Winners received Toshiba photo frames and will fly to Auckland to compete at the national level. I judged the Dance competition- first interviewing each team, looking at their logbook, glancing at their code, evaluating their robot and being awed by the level of professionalism exhibited by these young kids- some just learning to read/write! During the Dance performance the kids would join their costumed robot or robots (some teams had up to 4 robots!) and dance synchronized to music ranging from Itsy Bitsy Spider to "The Humans are Dead". Sadly no Propeller's this year, hopefully 12Blocks will change that. John and Jill did a great job organizing the event! Here some photos:
