Switching regulator recommendation

I have typed this sort of thing into electronics websites search engines before, but as you well know, you get somewhere between 1 and 100 billion results, and I don't know what to pick, and I know you guys can show me some common approaches, and some readily available part numbers.

Can one of you fine gentlemen recommend a good way/part number for accomplishing the following task:

- Output 5 or 6vdc (either, or anything in between will be fine)

- Output capable of ~3A (more is fine)

- Input voltage of between ~9 and ~14vdc (normally between ~11 and ~13.5vdc)

- And some kind of through hole package. Preferably a DIP package, although the "TO" package would work as well.

If you guys can help point me in the right direction on some common IC's for that I would appreciate it. There are just so many things I run into, and so many ways of doing that, that I have no idea what would be the most practical thing to use.

I have never tried to put together a regulator before.
