Voltage regulator problem

Hi

Being a newbie at electronics, I am trying to regulate voltage to a relay, which demands 12V.
I have successfully built a voltage regulator which takes 14.4 and gives 12V out (schematic).

Problem is, when I connect a second voltage soure with common ground (BLUE WIRE) to the regulator, the regulator output drops to 2V!!!

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Not to doubt what you're seeing, but there has to be some other electrical connection also happening when you make that single connection to the 7.2 v battery pack.

Can you show us a bit more of the circuits connected to each of those power supplies? Its almost as if your getting the 7.2 onto the pin 1 of the lm317 regulator.

    Cheers,

Here is the complete schematic. I am running the relays on 14V now, hope I dont damage them.
