component questions

i need a regulator that will either accept 24v or 12v dc. i was looking at this one http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/LM/LM7805.pdf but i have a little trouble reading the datasheet. if it cannot, perhaps i could just use a bunch of diodes to drop the voltage than perhaps feed that voltage into the regulator?

Also, i am trying to incorporate a Bs2 oem design into a project. I have been looking at the bill of materials on parallax.com but some components do not show or are obsolete from mouser.com. I decided to find close as possible matches to the original component I am subing out. Since this is my first time trying to do this and since parallax has a great support forum, I decided to pass it through here first to see if it was okay.

i was going to use this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=2N3904_J05Zvirtualkey51210000virtualkey512-2N3904J05Z for the 2n3904 transistor
use this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=2N3906TAvirtualkey51210000virtualkey512-2N3906TA for the 2n3906 transistor
use this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=M24C16-WBN6Pvirtualkey51120000virtualkey511-M24C16-WBN6P as the EEPROM
use this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=TC54VC4302EZBvirtualkey57940000virtualkey579-TC54VC4302EZB as the voltage detector
use this: http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=ZTT-20.00MXvirtualkey59070000virtualkey520-ZTT2000MX as the 20hz ceramic resonator

everything else i found was exact and of course i will get the PBASIC interpreter chip off of parallax website. thanks for the help

    1A is sufficient

The regulator will get very hot, then. I'd use a switcher.
