Propeller Based Novelty Record Player?

I saw this a while back and thought it would be really cool to make one using a Basic Stamp. With my recent venture in to all things propeller, I thought it might be a better project for me learning the prop instead:

www.x-tremegeek.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=27638

My thoughts to work out are:

Audio circuit: With a stamp, this would just be a separate circuit that the stamp controls (volume, etc) With the prop, can the audio go through the prop? If I can go through the prop, I can add "song detect" that will stop when it detects "silence" for "x" amount of time.
Needle pickup: Gotta find out how to do this part, should be simple?
Drive mechanism: How to get the vehicle to maintain the correct turning radius? It appears that they have the needle floating with limit switches and as the vehicle drives "forward" it will turn left/right based upon keeping the needle between the limit switches?
Control: IR remote?
Display: Maybe just a few LEDs as a status display? (On/Off, 33/45rpm, low battery)

Anyone have any input on this for a Prop-newbie?

you will also need to calculate how close to the center you are. the closer to the center you are the slower you will have to drive to keep the rpm accurate.

if i remember correctly the needle is pushing against a crystal which generates a small AM signal.
