using reed switchs

Hi.
i am looking at making my self a alarm system and i wish to use a stamp 2 to control my system, i am thinking of using reed switches but i am no sure the best way to check the state and if i need any other circuit to do this.
i am new at using the stamp and need some help.

Use a multimeter to test your switch and magnet to optimize the switching function. The·axial·position of the switch is critical to maximum sensitivity, as is the location and direction of travel of the magnet.
