Very impressive.· Do you need a PC attached to the camera or does the camera connect direct?

Hi,
It's easy to use ViewPort to track a face, a color, or a circle. Just download, make sure your Prop and Webcam are connected, then run tutorial #15. In ViewPort you can click on what type of object you want to track. The scaled x,y coordinate will be continually sent to your spin program, where you can control your servos. Good luck!
Hanno
Looks cool.· This is a good possibility.· I thought these cams were only good for tracking color.· Looks like the new one does motion tracking now.· Very nice.
Hooked it up.· That IS pretty sweet.· I'm assuming that you cannot go without the PC hooked up.· Right?· Because you have OPEN CV pre-processing?· Or am I wrong?· Can I hook the web cam up directly to my propeller.· I haven't tested it yet because I need to go out and get an adapter from USB to micro USB.

Not totally. You could use a serial keypad and a wireless transciever pair, then hide somewhere nearby and use the gun to pelt your opponants. OR you could add a camera to that mix and have the camera stream back live video. You could use the prop to put a crosshair on the screen, and if you where using Xbee then you could play soft air form up to 30 miles away.

I think that issues with gun violence and the like shouldn't be taken into consideration. This won't hurt anyone, and it is a valuable way to learn about technology. The focus is on the engineering, not the guns.
That being said, I think that for the cost of the cmuCam you could easily buy the parts for a dedicated PC that would do vision 50 times better, and be much more flexible. You could then use a microcontroller of your choice to interface to the electromechanical parts of the turret.
you can buy the software and build your own Sentry. Every now and then the whole, assembled system is for sale. (the laptop that is used is an Acer Aspire One and is only $250). that's less than a most of the small hand held computers but with much better performance. the system is also very flexible allowing you to use any servos, any camera, and any laptop. it could be used for a security camera system all the way up to an extremely illegal lethal weapons platform. here's some more pictures from www.paintballsentry.com
I just want to voice my disagreement with StefanL38's (sorry, Stefan) request to delete this thread. I am sure that it all start from a good heart but its a way worse cure than the presumed disease.
First, I strongly disapprove of censorship in general, and in tech forum in particular. It is utterly naive to think that most of what's published in THIS particular forum couldn't provide some sort of assistance, ideas, or leads to a criminally minded fool. So, who's going to dictate what's to be censored, and on what grounds. And what about all the other microcontroller web forums? Should they be skimmed too? Knowledge is a two-way street: what could be used by criminals also teaches others how to defeat them.
Second, I do not like guns either. I my country, you can own and license a rifle for hunting. And a hound. Period. But not a machine gun or anything like that. I am not an American so perhaps this explains why I'll never understand the passion of some of them for *big* guns. But it's my understanding that its part of their 2nd Amendment and culture. So, let them deal with their own mess while we mind our own business. This holier than thou approach is a bit off.
Finally, this is a technical forum. It is indisputable that whatever technology that was developped around weaponry also found use in other harmless projects. This turret thing could be equipped with something far more useful than a gun and be used for something else. Beside, the knowledge that can be derived from target motion processing is impressive. Robotics enthusiasts from this forum would gain a lot from this field of expertise.
But please, no technical censorship. Or we'll loose the remote controlled aircraft (with on-screen reporting) threads, and long-range laser telemetry threads, and supercomputing propeller threads, and...
Yeah this is awesome.· However a big part of my need is to educate myself.· So I like the challenge of writing the software.· Even if I end up writing 1/2 of it and relying on a pc for· the other half.· I've read the painball sentry site inside and out!
Thanks!

Hi Shane,
Yes, a pc is required to run opencv. Mind you, a pc doesn't have to be a huge desktop, there are lots of nano-size boards with truly impressive performance/memory/$
And for many hobby/industrial projects, a pc is typically close by anyway...

Thanks.· I'll hack on it a while.· I guess I'll have to figure out how to write my own filter to identify any moving object instead of just a face.· I appreciate the help.· Any suggested nano-sized fanless pc's?·

Didnt read the whole thread... so sorry in advance.· Ive been working off and on image tracking system with prop for a few weeks.· so far its able to track a peace of paper where ever·I move it and it controls a servo the keep the paper centered in the camera view.· eventualy i want to add simple object recoginition all using just the prop. but first ill prefect the tracking portion to track specifice types of objects etc.
Im using a VS6502 image sensor, basicly because its cheep, but that means the prop has to run it and interpit the line readouts and control the exposure.· I have it running at a slow frame rate (~5fps) so i can send the image thats being tracked to the computer over serial link·to see whats going on.· anyways ill post the source code,· it was never ment for posting so ignore the horible codeing ethics, commented out test code and random things i havent deleted from previous revisions.· any questions give me a shout, hope this at least gives some ideas.
Its the DoD worker in me speculating, but it would be interesting to see how smart one could make such a weapon system, could you spoof it with say card board or confuse it with multiple targets; or make it do IFF through image recognition and not transponders; or target a particular limb; increase its range to say 200 meters and work in all environments and conditions.
If it can be refined I can see buyers lining up from all over the world.
Did you watch the videos at paintballsentry.com?· They do have a video where they try to "Distract" it.· Also I am pretty sure they already have such devices in the military.· They can put a missle down the chimney of a place and clear out the building without knocking it down (from what I have learned from some military guys).· So I bet it's possible.
That being said -- we just got done getting flamed by "anti gun", "liberal feelings" type posts.· So let's keep the topic about the fun sport of "airsoft" to keep from getting distracted by more flaming.
So far I think the OpenCV/Viewport interface to the propeller is what I am going to try first.· It still requires a small PC but will allow me to write the logic for tracking/leading and controlling the motors.· I'll be stunned if I get that done real fast.· Anyone know where I can get an x/y axis arm built already.· I really am not wanting to go through the mechanical learning curve at the same time.· I'd prefer to start with a good solid servo arm.

Regardless of how much hurting a gun can creates:
A GUN IS A GUN !
And let your 6 year old son play around with this is teaching him
- guns don't hurt
- guns are common
