Can I run with the external crystal if the "dreaded PLL failure" occurs?

    Yes

The only thing that's broken is the PLL. You can use RCSLOW, RCFAST, or XINPUT modes.

    Thanks Mike.

Can XINPUT mode be used with the·crystal on the proto board?· I can't get·XINPUT or XTAL1 to work, only RCFAST n RCSLOW.· I can see a signal on X1 and X0 on my protoboard.· Is there any chance this is a repairable problem?

It's not a repairable problem unless you can replace the Propeller chip. Some people have done that, but I wouldn't suggest learning SMD rework by starting with a large package like the Propeller.

As far as I know, XINPUT requires an external oscillator connected to XIN. They come in pretty small packages these days and should be easy to wire piggyback on the Protoboard

Chip Quik makes chip removal very easy:

    chipquik.com

I often use it to remove fine-pitch devices. One of the free sample kits should give you enough to remove two or three Propeller chips.
