What is the best/preferred way to mount the lm2937 and lm2940 voltage regulators? Is it better to mount it flat or freestanding ? with or without a heat sink?

Thanks,

Greg

depends how much current you will be drawing, how much space you have, and how much a voltage drop you will have.

i stick to surface mount and use the pcb as a heat sink. you can do this with through hole components also by bending it over and having a large copper pad on the pcb. if current and voltage drop make it so a lot of power is dissipated then you will want to add a heat sink or consider using a different regulator.
