help with connection

i have a BASIC stamp homework board, which I'm connecting to my computer using a USB to COM port cable. This virtual com port is clearly working, because when i try to identify devices using the BASIC stamp editor, it detects a device with positive loopback and echo. Additionally, the light on my homework board blinks on when I try to upload some code so something must be transmitting. The problem is that the software is NOT detecting a basic stamp, and when I try to identify, 'Device Type' is blank.

Any ideas?

    Not all USB to serial cables work with the stamp. Areyou using one of the recommended ones?
