Hello, and good morning.· I have tried for several days now to post on the forums under the Basic Stamp, and attach a photo.· The photo is only 1 megabyte, so it should upload.· However, it is not uploading.· Is there something turned off at forum headquarters to prevent this, or is it my machine/ISP?

Thanks DenO

You have to upload the photo to a server somewhere (I use my own web site) and provide a link to it using the IMG or URL tags.

Er, I don't think that's strictly true. Here (attached) is a photo that I simply uploaded to the forum's attachment manager.

I didn't upload it to any other site first: just opened the attachment manager, uploaded it, and posted.

Don't forget to use "Post Reply" at the top of the thread not down in the "Quick Reply" section.

mctrivia has a nice hosting site for forum members: uploader.propmodule.com/

It was intended as a u-tube alternative, but it works fine for smaller files.

As for the forum attachment manager, I've had a problem with it using an early version of Google Chrome, and so I had to use IE.

One megabyte may be over the limit. Or maybe you're trying to post an image type (e.g. TIFF) that the forum doesn't permit. But the bigger quesiton in my mind is this: why are you trying to upload such a large photo to start with? Any photo that doesn't fit entirely on the screen is of little value to the viewer, since they have to scroll to see all of it.

These are the rules I adhere to for posted images:

    1. Post GIFs for diagrams, scope traces, screen captures, or anything else with hard lines and limited colors.

    2. Post JPGs for actual photos, and use about a 25% "quality" setting to reduce the file size.

    3. Make sure every image posted is no more than 800 pixels wide.

Thanks to all...I didn't think that a 1 megabyte photo was that big. I still can't get it to upload. I will try tomorrow at the coffee shop, where they have alittle more speed. I haven't had any trouble in the past uploading photos using my cell phone, even to this forum or any other forums for that matter. It does take a couple of minutes, but it has always worked. No big deal, really.

Anyone know good freeware for reducing the size of photos for uploading?

paint is a very easy to use program. for diagrams use .png. Very small and lossless. For photos use jpg 600x600 is big enough. As mentioned my server uploader.propmodule.com is free and available to all forum members with no restrictions on size and supports most file formats you could ever want to use. If you use my site it will generate the code for you to put the image in the forum. Also you will be able to see all uploaded files at uploads.propmodule.com

Well, I have 2 issues to discuss this morning regarding down sizing photo files.

Number 1....reference the Irfanview software.· I know for a fact, that when I downloaded that software a year ago and enabled it, it automatically took all my photos with a Jpeg extenstion and relocated them to another directory and added ALOT of numbers to the file name (probably for it's own us) .· Plus, it somehow took my Documents folder (windows XP) and denied me access to it.· This is the folder where I orginally had all my photos.· To this day, I cannot gain access to this folder and I am the authorized user of this machine.· I was "floored" when I couldn't get into that folder to view my various photos.· I did find ALL the photos, later,·under another non-descrip folder where Irfanview had moved them.·I had to ·renamed that folder and unstalled Irfanview.· I even took this machine to a geek and they were scratching there head on the access denied message to My Documents.·

Number 2....I am well versed in the use of Paint.· However, I guess I am not that smart at it.· I cannot figure how you can take a photo that is, lets say 2 megabytes, and reduce the WHOLE photo down to some other value.· Not just a part of the photo, but the WHOLE photo.· Any of you Paint experts give me some instruction?· Remember, the WHOLE photo, not just a cornor, or the middle of the photo.

Thanks...and be careful with the Infanview software.

Remember, nothing is for free without strings of somesort..

I've been using Irfanview for about three years and haven't had any problems with it.

Sure things can be free without strings. My uploader is. I pay nothing because I already have the server for other things propmodule.com,aigamez.com,visiblephoto.com. You pay nothing because I do not ask for any money and do not require you to do anything for me.

A walk is free with no strings.(unless you go to a park that charges admission.)

Leon...have you ever encountered "Access denied" on your computer. Better yet, go to "My Computer" and then click on "Documents" and tell me if you get an "Access denied" error message.

    Thanks DenO
