Breakout board for Hydra connector - Hydra Expansion Cards for everyone!!

I have a couple Hydra Expansion Boards, however I don't have the Hydra. I got the boards because I wanted to experiment with the item and also to read the contents of the manuals (which are done very nicely!) The Hydra connector itself doesn't fit in breadboards and would potentially fit in protoboards, but not easily. Therefore I designed a breakout board for a connector that is found at Digi-Key. This breakout board allows for adding a connector to a project instead of soldering to the expansion cards or doing something drastic.

The connector for the breakout boards is here: parts.digikey.com/1/parts/158562-conn-cardedge-20pos-100-x-200-395-020-520-202.html

I attached pictures of the board and the connector. I am in a hotel room at the moment, so the lighting isn't great. I can't test fully the 13 or 14 of June because my stuff is being shipped to Singapore. However I am confident that the design is good as it is pin to pin and no fancy routing.

I have a handful of connectors and breakout boards. I can put some in the mail over the next couple weeks if anyone is interested. Eventually I will get this up on the Brilldea site, but for now I will offer it here through the forums.

For US$9.00 you can get a breakout board and the EDAC connector pictured (some assembly required). Shipping is via first class mail from Singapore and will be a flat fee of US$3.00 (order one, two or five, it is the same shipping fee). Let me know via PM if you are interested and I can forward payment info.

Thanks OBC. Next week I will try and snap some better pictures (especially some pics with a card inserted) and get a unit assembled.

I was thinking a Spin Studio adapter card would be easy to do too. NGL, are you planning a PCB based on your design?

@NGL - I missed that post you refered to. That's great! Is the spacing between rows fit the protocard? or do you need to spread or squeeze them together to get it to fit?

Timothy: No - I am not planning a PCB.

Brian: I needed to spread the socket pins to fit the protoboard.

The socket pins are not standard 0.1" all around so therefore the pins need to be spread some. If the community would like, and if Brian is not already making one, I would be willing to put together a Spin Studio Hydra Expansion Connector breakout board. I would need just a little bit of time to setup the PCB layout. The cost of the kit would be the same for the Hydra Expansion Breakout board I am offering now (US$9 per kit).

    Timothy,

That's great! I certainly would support your efforts to produce such a device.

I ordered a Hydra 512k ram expansion board, so anything that will permit me to experiment with that exact board is required.

Yes, for US$12 you get the PCB and the connector shown in the picture. You will have to solder them together and add any headers if wish to use them. The price include first class mail shipping. I don't have the item listed on Brilldea's web site, but if you PM me your e-mail address I will forward a PayPal Invoice and we can send your item out today or tomorrow (depending on when we get the confirmation of funds).

Bumping the thread!! Man, it has been a month since I first posted this.

I am still considering a SpinStudio version, just need another weekend or two to catch up on Brilldea work. Because I am behind, I haven't created a web page for this device yet. I have plenty of more for sale, so if you are interested drop me a PM or an e-mail.

Bumping the thread. I thought that maybe the Hydra Expansion Board that I offer and the Hydra EtherX board would be a good combo for those wanting to start working with the WIZnet W5100 in SPI mode. No problem. Post a shot of how you use it so others can see how to apply the Hydra Connector.
