SD and microSD compatible?

Hello All,

I've been using the SDCard adapter from ucontroller.com very happily (http://ucontroller.com/documentation/SDCardDoc.html)

I'm working on a project that will need several boards made, I'm not ready to jump into surface mount soldering so I was thinking about just putting one of these directly to the board.

Is microSD the same as SD only smaller?

would this product (with several pin swaps) work the same way? (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=544)
Its much smaller and would make it easier to put onto a board I was making.

I'm using the fsrw & friends routines for the SD Filesystem.

Thanks,

Rick

microSD has 8 connections whereas SDcard has 9
SDcard is also capable of using 4 bit parallel transfers to speed things up. MicroSD is not. I don't even think there is a 2bit parallel mode for MicroSD.
On the propeller, I don't believe anybody has implemented any 4bit protocol as of yet, so I would go with microSD. I have a previous version of that breakout board with some 10K pullup resistors. It works great.
It was a little confusing because of the difference in nomenclature, but it works great on my Demoboard.

The 4 bit mode is encumbered by licenses and other Wahnsinne, so it is not freely available :-(. I do not know if that is valid in all countries, though (and I couldn't care less). I think if it is only a way of using 4 bits instead of 1 a logic analyzer and a lot a patience can be used to discover it.

I am using microSD without problems in SPI mode. There is a caveat though, microSD does not have to support SPI mode, although it appears the more common named brands do anyway. My understanding is the 4 bit mode (licensed) is required for both SD and microSD. microSD is becomming more common. Try the socket I am using on the TriBlade (and RamBlade). It is easily hand soldered with a fine tip soldering iron. see my parts list, part from DigiKey - the pins are exposed, not hidden like most microSD sockets.
