Is there any progress or followup in using these chips in a helper role to take the load off of the main processor?

JMH, there's a few of us working on different mc9s08 variants. I reckon there will be announcements soon.

Personally I'm busy exploring Cypress PSoC to achieve the same thing, until the Freescale daughter cards arrive from the US.

What did you have in mind for them?

I am using a variant of this in the RamBlade as an option to load boot code into the prop because I cannot use the normal eeprom due to the way my design uses these pins. However, it is not designed to offload any processing power.
