games for consels are usually higher because they have to pay roiltes back to the consol maker. all the major consols sell at a loss. They are selling the system cheap expecting you to buy many games and recoup there money in the games.

@ugha - the ideal price for software (from the makers pov) is the most you're willing to pay for it. Many commercial software products are expensive because they sell to businesses that aren't price sensitive. What they don't have is an easy way to discriminate / find out how much you're willing to pay. It's the same reason there are student rates at the movies & senior citizen discounts at Denny's.

Nick:
Very good point. So basically they charge so much because people are willing to pay it, but if they had some way of lowering the price to only the select element that need the software but can't
afford the price, they would... simply to get more sales and more money.

This must be the reason for all the "lite" versions out there.

I still say that its insane how much most software costs... but you all have made good points.

I still stand by my point though, if prices were less somehow (more "lite" versions? Shareware? digital distribution?) then piracy wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Stardock, a software company known for very good game creation has dropped all anti-piracy protection. They instead offer games for $40 and provide online support and enhanced
features.

Most people assumed that they would fold because of priacy, instead they made a fortune. I think if more companies followed this concept, piracy would be reduced greatly.

I think a "Lite" version with NO upgrades and NO tech support for a cheap price is a good idea.

I wouldn't even care if it had some annoying features like "making you wait 5 minutes every hour" or something that businesses wouldn't tolerate so they will purchase the "full" version.

There is a fine line between arrogance and confidence. Make sure you don't cross it...

That'd be cool... Maybe a 5 minute video ad for the full product or one of the
company's other products that played every hour?

Annoying? Sure... worth saving $50+? Absolutely :)
