Question about I2c

I hear a lot about I2c compatible. What is I2c?· Is it an interface like rs232? Where can I find information on it. Is it the way things are wired? or is it a chip?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I see it connected to emproms quite a bit. I just don't understand it.

I2C is a serial communications protocol that is usually used for chip to chip communication on a single board. Google "i2c specification"
