XBee compatibility

Anyone had experience with an XBee-Pro 868 single channel module that comes with the development kit and a regular Xbee-Pro Module both on 2.4 ghz ? I can't seem to put the dev module on another channel. The new XBee can be put on channels 0C thru 1D no problem. The dev module says it is on ch FF. All this is done with X-CTU XBee configuration software.
The problem started when I shorted +12 to one of the dev modules. My bad...no problem, I'll buy a new one. Got 1 new one and now this...
I feel maybe the dev module only talks to another single channel dev module. Can anyone confirm this ?

I believe the PRO versions only have support for 14 channels, while the regular versions support 16.

I just found out the 868 is the Frequency. For Europe. In USA you need 900 MHZ or 2.4 ghz....
