Hyperterminal with Vista

Some of you may have run into the same trouble I had:· Hyperterminal doesn't come with Vista.

But, I've discovered (via Google) that you can just copy the relevant files from an XP installation, but them in a folder somewhere, and it runs just fine under Vista.

I know there's a demo version of Hyperterminal you can get for free, but this way is more hassle free.

I'd recommend going more retro and hunting down a copy of terminal.exe, the 16-bit terminal program that shipped with Windows 3.1. It's far easier to use and more reliable than hyperterminal, does not make you go through the silly antic of "setting up a connection" when you just want to connect straight to a port, is much more reliable about logging and xmodem transfers, and is much better about actually changing the settings when you tell it to. The only negatives are that it only knows about com1-com4, since it uses the 16 bit API which didn't provide for higher ports, and it only provides for baud rates up to 19,200. Neither of those is much of a problem for most users.

Best to use PST or PropTerminal with the Propeller. Otherwise can arrange Hyperterminal later.

Yes, PST is nice. But, it doesn't have YMODEM... YMODEM is my favorite way to reliably move data as files from Prop to PC.

There is Br@y++ Terminal on www.smileymicros.com. It gives some different high end baud rates

PST doesn't work with my Vista 64. I can use it with my notebook with xp 32.
Is it only my problem or other users have the same problem?

I use Vista (home) and both PST and PropTerminal. I did get Hyperterminal to run, but it would not save the settings correctly each time. Just copied the two? files from an XP machine (see google for how to do it).

I have not had any problems requiring error detection - are you going long distances??

I only have an hub in the middle, and short cables. I can correctly program a serial protoboard with a key but not connect with PST. Next time I'll try with a direct connection, and I'll let you know.
