Could someone please explain what the EMIC is capable of?· i.e.; can it speak in foreign languages, or just English?· Also, please post any other bits of info that aren't in the product summary....

Thanks.

Read the EMIC documentation. It's pretty thorough and includes some Stamp demo programs.

The EMIC translates American English text into phonemes using various rules, then the phonemes into audio. The EMIC also accepts phoneme strings directly for those times when the pronounciation of a word by rule isn't quit what's wanted. Phoneme strings can also be used for pronouncing non-English words although some unusual non-English phonemes may not be included (I'm not sure).

Also look at the data sheet for the underlying Winbond chip, WTS701.pdf That document goes into more detail on some of the features, such as the pacing characters.

You can feed it text in any language you want, and it will attempt to read it using American English rules of pronunciation. You would find it often necessary to play with phonetic spellings.

It has trouble in my ears with the pallatives, like the letter "n". The number 13 comes out sounding pretty much like the number 30, especially when the channel is noisy, because it cuts short the n. Overall, I would say it does a very decent job, but you do know you are listening to a synthesized voice. It is certainly easy to use.

Does anyone happen to have an extra EMIC (Male voice) that you no longer need or use? It appears that Parallax no longer carries those and I would like to find one for a project I am working on. If you have one you'd like to part with just send me a PM.

I didn't know ther was ever a male version made... Why did Parallax stop making/carrying it?

    Thanks.

I think because Winbond no longer makes the male chip used on the board. The Devantech SP03, which uses the same Windbond chip, also is not available with a male voice anymore.

Parallaxians -- if the male chip is ever available, please offer male Emics again smile.gif

Maybe you could get creative and add one of these $15 voice changers to the audio output?

Sure. The EMIC uses 5V logic levels and the Propeller uses 3.3V logic levels. There's a long thread on interfacing 5V and 3.3V logic off one of the "sticky threads" on the Propeller forum. Any of the techniques suggested should work. I suspect a 1K series resistor in both the Sin and Sout leads would work.

Okay, thanks. I was getting worried on whether it would work or not with my prop.
