HOME BASE/Battery Recharger

I am going to make a kind of home base, that will eventually be topped with a IR Beacon. For now, I need it to recharge a very small 3v battery (about the size of a dime). Anyway, I have found this circuit for a charger using a wall transformer. My question is, I would like this home base to be mobile, without cords, for free movement all the way around it. Can I just replace the corded wall transformer with say a 9v battery?

Probably not. you need better control of the charging rate and some "smarts" if you are charging nimh or li-anything type batteries.

Franlin is right. You need to control the charging current. That circuit you posted would either fry the wall wart, the diode, or the battery. Once you have a charge control circuit however there is no reason it could not be powered by another battery.
