Carl Lawhon, a junior at Pembroke Hill School who received a grand award for his project titled “The Practical Utilization of Wireless Protocol and Swarm Mentality to Improve Overall Efficiency and Effectiveness in Autonomous Robot Platform.”
Translated: The 17-year-old built three small robots using a Propeller for control running on tractor treads, hooked them up with a GPS receiver and compass, and turned them loose in a field to find a shack.
“I’m very interested in robotics and particularly cooperative robotics and to efficientize autonomous robotic systems,” he said.
His interest in robots isn’t rooted in science fiction, although he does enjoy “Star Wars.”
Lawhon got his start putting together a Lego robot kit when he was 11 or 12.
Next stop: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a summer internship.
