Sealed lead acid batteries

I picked up a sealed lead-acid battery for a new robotics project. It's a 12V 5Ah. Measures about 3"x4"x4", with tab style terminals on top, seems perfect for what I wanted to do.

Question is, when mounting this on my robot chassis. Does it have to be mounted upright, with the terminals facing up? I'd like to lay it on it's side, but I don't want any acid to leak out, or adversely affect it's life.

Is there a vent tube on the battery?

no, no vent tube, caps or any other type of vent. I assume the "Sealed" in "Sealed Lead-acid battery" means there is no vent.

I'm wondering if there is a gel or a liquid acid inside.

You need to check the battery data, one I have can be used in any orientation. Most of them use a gel electrolyte.

It will be either a gel cell or an absorbent glass mat battery.· Either can generally be used in any position.

I'm going to assume it's ok to mount on it's side.

    Thanks for the replies!
