····· attachment.php?attachmentid=59744

Parallax is pleased to announce that we have reduced the price on Propeller chips from $12.99 each to $7.99. Our costs on all three chips (P8X32A-D40, P8X32A-Q44, and P8X32A-M44) have reduced and we are passing the savings on to our customers! Be sure to take a look at our high quantity pricing as well.

@ Scott : I think you are reading way too much into it beyond accepting that Parallax have kindly passed their cost savings on to the end user.

Hopefully distributors will soon clear their existing stock and we can get cost savings through them, rather than buy direct from Parallax and leave distributors lumbered with unsellable stock or having to take a loss to match pricing. Otherwise, not quite 'low prices' locally; equivalent $16.50 each.

This is also a sign that the Propeller is a success; the development costs are covered and there are more chips being ordered.

    Well done!

Couldn't help but notice the Propeller Hat Decal price has remained unchanged. What's the status on that? smile.gif

Let's think about this a little. Parallax is not about to upset it's distributors... but it also has us to worry about.
I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to guess, that for a period after the PropII comes out, it might be a little tough to find a PropI... at which point the suppliers will be jumping for joy, and we all will be more than happy with our PropII's.

    It could happen.

$7.99 might be the cheapest price you will ever see on a Propeller. It is time to think how many you might need in the next two years and get them while they are hot.

    @ rjo_

It's interesting to look at Parallax stock on the various chip packages; DIP is severely depleted compared to QFN/QFP.

That might not be because more DIP's are sold than anything else, but it wouldn't surprise me. It's a very convenient package for home and hobby users, and will continue to be so when the Prop II arrives. I don't see Parallax junking the Prop I line nor have I seen any indications that is the plan. I don't think it's time to be worrying about any forthcoming Prop I shortages and likely to never be.

I personally think the Prop I prices could drop again, but that depends on world economy and how many Parallax are shipping - so buy them while they're hot, not because it's the lowest price, but to get it down even lower smile.gif

Digikey still hasn't updated their price. Maybe because they're still sitting on 1,512 of them (in QFP)...
Guess I have to buy from Parallax (Once free shipping rolls around again).

Maybe there are less DIP packages in inventory because Parallax has less DIPs manufactured?
But that might mean there is more "end product" shipment volume than hobby volume.

Nice to see though, forget low end processors when your development time
costs 300 times more than the chip. One chip in stock for all my projects.

Congratulations Parallax. Another milestone. This is a welcome and significant price drop. The Propeller makes an excellent intelligent peripheral, linked of course to another Propeller as the Processor via 2 wire 14Mbps serial. smile.gif

And my 2c - don't wait for the Prop II. It is still way off. Get your feet wet now smile.gif

I find it very interesting that a manufacturer would under cut a distributor?

    Capt. Quick,

That's not the case, actually. We provided our distributors with a 45-day notice, and if it's a problem for them (i.e., they still have inventory at the former cost) we'll figure out a stock balance solution for them. They are customers, too, and we treat them the same way we would like to be treated.

    Sincerely,

    Ken Gracey

    Spot on Ken smile.gif

And now we have a cheapish BUT fully programmable Propeller Peripheral Chip (a Propeller of course) with 32 I/O pins and 8 processors with 2KB and a shared 32KB for <$8.00· No extra inventory. No new programming languages. No new IDE's. yeah.gif

What can we do with this?

Example: A full terminal emulator with VGA, TV, Audio, Keyboard, Mouse, UARTs, SPI, I2C, etc, etc all with one Propeller chip !!!
And communicate with a Propeller at around 14Mbps over 2 pins !!! roll.gif

    Cluso99,

You forget the external EEPROM and crystal required to get the mentioned features functioning.
Well, EEPROM isn't a requirement, but I think nobody will have a development system without one...

Ok, an extra pin (reset) and no second eeprom required. Xtal is 40 cents, but another pin and thats handled. So 4 pins if you like. And the other is only 2 pins. So which ever prop has 2 spare pins is the master.

BTW, my TriBladeProp does not yet have eeproms in 2 Props, and the third is there because the SD driver tests it, not because it's used. BUT, 1 eeprom will be present when I have finished development, or maybe shortly - unknown. I haven't decided if I fit a 24C512 or a 24C1024. There is virtually no $ difference between 24C256 and 24C512.

I've done some more digging around, and found the following.
    in #1 we have
    £10.00 at Digikey
    then
    £11.00 at Spinvent
    then
    £11.50 at MilInst
    then
    £11.57 at Farnell
and finally at an April foolish last place we have
    £12.99 at RS

    Hello,

All of our distributors process their price changes on different schedules. It may take a little while to see the new price on all distributor websites. We are doing our best to communicate with them about the new suggested retail price for Propeller chips. Don't give up, price changes are being made. It just might take a little while longer then expected.

    Kind Regards,
    Lauren

This is great. Wow, with SX chips now costing $3.99, and a questionable future ahead for the line, I'm thrilled that at $7.99 the two lines are getting closer in cost, to make the prop economically more feasable at volume. (With parallax not being at the mercy of anyone for the wafer). Still. The SX holds its purpose in the world, and I hope parallax keeps a low cost line under its belt (I hope the SX lives on).

I use Propeller and SX compared to the alternatives because of the fantastic support, free IDE and compilers. Try finding such comprehensive documentation or active , helpful, forums with an AVR or PIC.
