This really depends on how you want to implement the overall design, of course you can do it with 4 buttons, but you can also do it with 1 button.

I have been working on something on the side that uses only 1 button for setting the time on a DS1302. My problem right now is settling on a nice loooking display
case that I want to use with it.

Still in testing mode, but here is a You-Tube video of a Propeller based TIX clock I have designed. Towards the end of the video it shows the 1 button programming.

I just figuered out how to do this myself. One of the biggest issues is debouncing or latching the buttons so that your program doesn't run away on you. Check out my code here: VI77-708 Firmware.bs2. You can use it, just drop my name in there somewhere.
