SD card adapter 2.0

My SD card adapter has a new look. No changes in functionality or pinouts, but it is a little smaller. I switched to SMT parts to speed up my assembly time.

Each adapter is assembled, and tested before shipping. I add the 6 pin header to plug it into a breadboard. If you are using with SpinStudio, I include the 20 pin header, but it's not soldered onto the PCB.

Attached are photos of the new adapter in it's assembled state, and the raw boards as I received them.

    Ha,

    I just finished a break out board for a Micro-SD card.

    Very interesting.

    James,

    I had thought about making a Micro-SD version, but I had thought it would not be really much better. Once the socket for SpinStudio and the side header was added, it wouldn't be appreciatively smaller, and most of the time, when you buy a micro-sd card, it comes with the SD sized sleeve to use it as an SD card anyway.

    I may have mis-judged the demand, maybe it will do well. I wish you luck with it.

    Brian;

    Could the next version of the SpinStudio motherboard be equipped with a 6-pin female header (or solder vias) to provide pins 0-3 + power, which would allow pins 4-7 on socket A to be used for other functions?

    Cheers!

    Sounds like a good idea for version 3.2 of SpinStudio, and not hard to implement. Btw - I haven't forgotten about the "super ProtoCards" I received a large batch of what I thought would be a winner, but found a fatal flaw. now I have quite a few green beverage coasters around the house.

    Note to all - all SpinStudio Mainboard have had a version # printed on them since their inception. This will be important for a few new boards coming out soon.

    Thanks to everyone else that have purchased!

    Brian,

    I didn't design the micro SD break out for sale. I did it for a project I'm working one. I need to interface with a micro-sd card and figure out all the programming, so I just made a breakout for it. It also has another chip on the breakout (another I need to interface with).

    I like your system so far. If you get to selling a lot of them, we may need to talk. We assemble a lot of items like what you have (in SMT of course). Sorry to spam your thread, but we need more customers.

    slightly off topic but it would be nice if your spin studio had 2x 16 pin headers with all io lines. that way any io not used by a module could be used off that header.

    Need to make your prop design easier or secure? Get a PropMod has crystal, eeprom, and programing header in a 40 pin dip 0.7" pitch module with uSD reader, and RTC options.

    That's another good idea, that subject has been brought up often, using the IO pins that modules leave behind. Most modules don't use every pin in it's pin group, the SD adapter is a good example, it only uses the first 4 pins in any given pin group. The other 4 pins go to waste.

    I've been thinking about the comment earlier in this thread about adding a 6 pin header to SpinStudio for a SD adapter. I'm thinking in a more general way.... The SD card interface is SPI, so why not call it an SPI port, It has CS, Clk, Din, Dout plus VSS and 3.3V. perfect for any SPI application and it's full duplex, or Din and Dout can be combined off board if needed.

    I also think an I2c connector would be a nice addition. Since 2 pins are dedicated to I2c for the boot EEPROM anyhow, might as well make a simple header right on the Mainboard. Is there any standards for a I2c connector as far as combining with VSS and VDD? For example a standard "servo" connector is "signal, +5V, Vss"

    Hi Brian;
    I like this idea, especially for the I2C. It would be great if the header mechanism would allow daisy chaining to add multiple devices/modules in a mechanically sound fashion.

    On the other hand I don't see how the SPI connector would work, since each device/module would need its own dedicated CS line; are you thinking of a multiwire connector that would be connected to a normal header-supported module board as an additional bus set?

    Cheers!

    if you add the 2x 16 headers i sugest then the cs line for each could be done through a jumper wire.

    In regards to the SPI connector. The CS line is certainly a problem. If I were to put a SD card adapter plug on board, that would allow the user to plug in other SPI devices, but only one at a time.

    The PropNIC (enc28j60) is also an SPI device. but the pinout for the breadboard connector is different, so there is already a conflict. There are so many SD adapters and PropNICs out there that I'd be hesitant to change either one.
