The demo propellar board comes with a HC-49US 5Hz crystal (or maximum frequency of 80MHz). Can I use a 8Mhz Crystal (or have maximum frequency of 120Mhz)?

There is very good information on this subject here.

Look to the bottom of a chart of what has been tried.

The official maximum system clock frequency is 80MHz where it's guaranteed to work over a specific range of temperature and supply voltage. Most Propeller chips will work up to 96MHz and some will work at higher frequencies. There's a graph in the datasheet that shows maximum clock frequency vs. package temperature and supply voltage. You can use an 8MHz crystal, but not with the 16x PLL multiplier.
