I found a kit made by the company who supplies Parallax with PIC's.· It is almost too good to be true.· $60 for a touch screen, OLED, a microcontroller, AND an on-board programmer.·· It is even shipped within 2 days!!· Do you think it's worth it, as I will barely be able to buy it with my meager and emaciated wallet?

Only you can answer the question of "is it worth it?"

Microchip, like many microprocessor manufacturers, wants to have students and working engineers familiar with their products so they'll design them into products that will hopefully sell so they'll make money making more microprocessors. They all sell development kits at low cost to encourage this. Students and hobbyists often become working engineers, so that's a "win-win" situation for everyone. Good luck trying to decide what to do!

Sounds like an Arduino (http://arduino.cc/) board. There's some really interesting "shields" for Arduino boards that include OLED touch screens...lookie here: http://www.liquidware.com/
