Distance Sensor Question

Hello,

Since you all, in the robotics forum, work with sensors all the time, I tought this might be the right place to stat with this question.

I would like to add a sensor to the rear of my truck to tell me the distance between it and anything I am backing up to.

I can handle the STAMP hardware and software but would like input on what type of sensor would work best here.

I'd go with the Sharp IR sensor family. They're more weather resistant than the Ping, so you can give them the necessary exposure. You'll have to mount it in a dry and dirt free place, shaded from the sun, and with a replaceable IR clear panel in front to protect it.
