Powering stamp advice

I know you can power the BS2 with 5v - 15v through VIN, so I decided for my automotive circuit that I could just power the stamp directly to the car's battery. When the alternator kicks on the voltage at most about 14.5 volts. Is this a good or bad idea. I am a little iffy about it because it pushes the stamps requirement just under the 15v mark. If this is too much for the BS2, would a 5v regulator be better on board my circuit? Thanks.

It's generally not a good idea to power something like a Stamp directly from a car's electrical system. Although the regulator is made for input voltages in excess of 15V, you can get noise pulses high enough to damage it (over 30V). I would make an 8V regulator using an LM7808 fixed regulator and use that to power the Stamp's own regulator. I would also add a fuse and some LC filtering to the input of the LM7808 regulator.
