Accelerometers

Guys i am doing a project that needs mems accelerometers as a part of it but i am not having a good idea of how exactly it works can you please help me. I wanted to know how exactly an accelerometer works if you place it on finger and move the finger with hands remaining constant will it sense or not. Please i need to work on this project very soon so help buddies

For a general "How does ______ work?" question, wikipedia is generally a good source.

One Gotcha that often tricks people is that an accelerometer can detect either rotation or translation, but neither when both are true. Actually, what I should say is that when the module is being translated and rotated at the same time, it detects both, and you can't tell the difference from the measurements. So, it will detect the rotation of your finger, or the translational movement, but when moving and rotating at the same time you won't get good data.
