For all of the Parallax BASIC Stamp development boards with a serial (DB-9) connector, you may use our USB to Serial Adapter. This adapter needs virtual com port drivers, which are automatically installed for Windows with the latest version of the·BASIC Stamp Editor software.

Are there any others that aren't from Parallax?

The Belkin brand of adapaters do not work with Parallax products.· RadioShack brand adapters are reported to work.

FTDI, the maker of the chips Parallax uses for its USB to serial adapters, makes its own line of USB to serial adapters in various forms and various I/O voltages. Have a look at their website. They make one line where the converter is in the USB plug itself. It comes in a 3.3V logic version (ideal for the Propeller) and a 5V version (for use with Stamps and other 5V logic). One advantage of these is that they make the 5V USB supply available which, though very limited in current capacity, is useful to have for some projects.

This decice www.digitus.info/en/products/accessories/?c=1216&p=3530 should work as it uses the FTDI chipset.

Approved USB to serial converter? Only "approved" if Parallax says this is the one and only. Recommended is what is on their website.

I have/use AirLink101 using Prolific chipset/driver. Picked this one up for < $10 at Fry's. Have also had good luck with anything using the FTDI chipset/driver which is also what Parallax embeds on their USB BOE.
