Compass/direction, no magnetic

Hello there

Is there somebody who can help me????
I need a device for showing the direction like a compass but cant use a magnetic one because it will be in·vertical pipe made of steel,
and the pipe can be magnetic in its self.
I dont need to know the true north, I can calibrate the device before I lower it down in the pipe.

Hope to get some answer.
Anders

    Jatk,

If the pipe is straight, not too long, and open on both ends,
several light sources at each end can provide directional
    sighting reference points.

You could use a gyroscope to determine the direction. There are several models available for use in model airplanes and helicopters. They are not "cheap" though.

    Good luck

would an accelerometer be the thing you need? of course you need to know the initial direction and keep a tally of changes in direction

I'd say a gyroscope would be best. As long as you're not going to be in there for days, the drift won't be a problem. Take a look at sparkfun for a plethora of gyros.
