I found the Parallax SoundPal, which looks like a nifty little chip, but I need to play some pre-recorded .wav files.· I'm looking for a chip that can store 3 or 4 files, each·being about 3-5 seconds long.· I need to be able to play the selected .wav file on a command·provided·by the·BASIC·Stamp.· Has anyone heard of such an animal?· Thanks. <Edit:· .mp3 or other audio·formats OK too!>

You could look for something like this on clearance somewhere:

Even at $4.99 a piece, they should be easy to hack into with minimal cash outlay. You can rig it so the BASIC Stamp activates the play button after you've used the device as sold to record your track. They only hold about 10-20 seconds of recorded voice and it isn't super quality. You'd have to use a board for each recording as you can't address separate messages... new recordings overwrite the previous ones. And you'll have to step down the voltage as they are 3 Volt.
The attached file is one of these devices opened up. I received a two pack for Christmas stocking stuffer; found it useless as a memo device and decided to hack it for experiments.
