if what you saw on those videos is enough, them the propeller may be a candidate.
nemesiswes, those vids that I did, were converted from AVI's so yes can "technically be any avi" ( pre-conversion ) to a format that I used for the PropGFX add-on for Hybrid, as the Hybrid has SD built onto the board, ( for retreival of the video from SD card ) so yes it can be done, and plays to composite AV, with mono audio.
but if you want decent quality ( as that image is 128x96 pixel resolution and propeller colours. ) you'd be better off going for an iPod or ARM if you want to do the programming yourself.
It's really down to what quality you're happy with like Ale said :D

I'm working on a 320x240 TFT driven by a Prop that I hope will able to play full screen video with audio from SD.
But driving TV or VGA is more difficult because you have to have the right timing...
I bet PropII will be able to do a decent codec too :D

PropII should do MP3 decoding, but I doubt it could do video decoding. But, we'll see...
600Mhz ARM Cortex A8, 430Mhz TMS320C64+ DSP, and 3D graphics accelerator. All on a 3" square board that takes <2Watts for $150
Run's Linux, has DVI-D output, and USB. I would still connect one if it's UARTs to a Propeller for external control interfaces, but...
I'm working on making a Laptop out of mine.
