Basic Stamp 2 Water Detector w/VB

I am trying to build a water detector with BS2s, that will be installed in streetlight electrical boxes, sending alarms and info to a comp running a vb program.·I will be using serial port splitters, connecting about 52 basic stamps to 3 ports. I need the VB program to be able to talk to individual stamps, reset them, and recieve alarms, alerting the precence of water. I also need to find out what type of water detector/sensor to use.
Any help would be appreciated.

    For the water sensor you could use a rain sensor that is used on lawn sprinkling systems. There is a small spong that when it gets wet, it makes contact and opens a relay which turns off the sprinkling system until the spong dries out.
