Noob Question about LCD

Hi guys,
I'm a total newbie to the Basic Stamps.· I have plenty of programming experience, but not much microcontroller experience.·
Quick question - is there a way to drive an LCD display (any of the larger ones 4x20 for example) with the BS1? It appears that requires the serial out feature (which makes sense) that the BS1 does not posess.· But from a cost perspective (for small scale production purposes) the BS1 is much cheaper.· I could be way off base here, so please set me straight.
