I need Transmitter Receiver help

I am trying to make a robot that will try and find another STAMP board. The robot has the receiver for the 433 MHz transmitter. I want to use RSSI and to find when it is getting closer or not. Does anybody know the code to get the RSSI value and then turn it into digital format so that I can use it? Also if anybody knows if the sensor can penetrate snow and how far, that information will also be useful.
