touch pad for joystick

today i took apart a remote that was broken, and on the inside to my suprise was a small touch pad thing, i has 4 wires so im guessing its a resistive touch screen, and on top of the touch screen there is a rubber "joystick" thing on top, when ever you push on the top of the rubber pad it presses on a different area on the touch pad, i was wondering if anyone here has ever seen anything like this, AND/OR, if you have any ideas for making a 4" long joystick with this, something that swivels, and im guessing a spring loaded pushing rod, idk, any ideas comments concerns or anxieties let me know
