Congratulations on the inauguration of a new president ... Here's hoping that Mr. Obama he will live up to all expectations and help to stabilise the world economy and worldwide relations ... Personally I believe he will...

Hopefully he will be able to promote education and STEM some more. I look around at my local university, and most of the students don't know a resistor from a capacitor and couldn't care less. But ask them all the tricks of Halo and they'll talk for hours...

SRLM,
Unfortunately that's not just a 'local' trait .... Change is needed and hopefully on the way .. Here's hoping ..

SRLM, just remember that word I taught you:

DINGLEBERRIES.

As for the new Pres, I do wish him well. If he can function half as good as he can give a speech, then there's hope yet. I can't imagine what it must be like to be faced with all the problems he's got right now. There's an old Chinese curse that says, "May you live in interesting times." I think it's interesting now and it's gonna get even more interesting these next 6 months. One thing I worry about is the possibility of good companies that supply parts I need going under during all this credit madness. I was thinking about buying another hundred barrels of plastic resin and stockpiling Propeller chips and storing it all in my blast-proof bunker, but the builder making my bunker couldn't buy cement and went bankrupt. Then I found out that all that plastic resin I bought was made in China and somehow got contaminated by infant formula. My new motto has become FWN? I won't tell you what it stands for except that the W = What and the N = Next.

FWN?

I like the phrase, Mark. I, too, hope Obama turns out to be an ok guy. Alot of politicians spew a bunch of BS, then go back on their word. I'm kind of hoping that all the socialist/marxist/class warfare rhetoric turns out to just be something he says to get elected. Like I said, however, I hope he turns out to do a good job, even if I wouldn't have voted for him if someone threatened me with pulling my good teeth and then setting me on fire and then killing puppies right in front of my eyes and....etc.

I did forget about dingleberry... Thanks for reminding me!

The 'may you live in interesting times' reminds me a talk show I listen to (Dan Carlin...), he uses it all the time. Whether you voted for the new officers that are taking office or not, it's sort of exciting. You might be able to compare it to going on a trip to visit a really annoying aunt: the aunt will slobber you with kisses and hugs, but you get out of the house. Perhaps a better analogy would be leaving middle school and going into high school. This is the first time in my memorable life (where I actually know what a president does and means) that somebody new is going to be there. I know O'Reilly of the publishing house supported him, so along with the rest of the world I'll watch and see what happens. Maybe he'll break out in stress zits?

All this talk of companies going out of business and the like has me curious...

Would anyone from Parallax mind letting us know how the company is handling the current situation?

Hey everyone...not to be the bad guy...while I understand he need for some to celebrate the occasion, political discussions on these forums have almost always ended up in debates or complaints to us from those with differing views. For that reason, even though this forum (The Sandbox) is non-topic for the most part, we have always tried to keep discussions of politics and religion out of it as these seem to be the two topics people tend to be very passionate about. Please see my reply in the following thread. Again, please understand this is just to keep the peace.

Ugha, no. Like most businesses, we've experienced a decline in sales and we've had to reduce staff in November. Realistically, for Parallax to be "out of business" would require an extreme economic downturn in which many other changes occur first [in my view, we'd need to see mass closure/bankruptcy of retail, restaurants, service industries, etc.]. Because we design and manufacture our products as a sole-source with 21 years of customers there's a lot of momentum to carry this company forward. Our products will always be available for you to purchase.

For over 50 years in South Africa when something is totally messed up, we’ve said “Its f%$# bushed”. As I watched my pension disintegrate in part 6 months through the incompetence of US SECs Cox, I’ve been saying “my pension’s totally bushed”. Of course no association is intended.

Obama has a terrible task ahead of him – Good luck America. The world depends on the skills of this one man.

To Chris Savage,

yes, I know we shouldn't get political on here, which is why I was trying to sound emotionally neutral about the past 8 years. But I did raise a valid question about the economic situation we're all in and I'm very glad Ken Gracey chimed in with some comforting news. That being said, I doubt Parallax would mind it very much if we started stockpiling their chips. Once the economy recovers, the next problem will be rampant global inflation. Those chips at $12 today will be worth $400 or $500 two years from now. Think of it as a wise investment. (Mr. Madoff are you listening???)

BTW, anybody out there in need of industrial quantities of plastic resin/baby formula???

Yes, Ken’s reply was outside of the discussion I was trying to avoid. In almost 4 years of supporting our customers on these forums as a moderator I have seen many seemingly innocuous discussions turn bad because they expressed opinions on religious or political subjects which others disagreed. These disagreements turned into heated debates as each member tried to prove/support their opinion and most of the messages ended up being removed. In one case a member was removed (at his own request) because he refused to sit idly as he put it while people said things he knew to be untrue.

There are much more productive things we can focus on in these trying times. Perhaps we should start a thread to get input on sensor and accessory ideas from our forum members…sure…let’s do that. See the following thread as I attempt to shift this discussion from politics to new products…

To all,

Chris, I know that discussions of politics and religion can become very heated at times but if we censor ourselves or allow others to do so we will loose the freedom to express our opinions. I respect a persons right to express their views as long as they do so in a reasonable and polite manner and allow me to do the same. If they do not do so I will simply ignore them, and in the case of this forum you also have the option of removing them.

I also hope that President Obama lives up (at least partly) to the promises he made and the expectations people have of him. On an optimistic note I think he would have to work at it extremely hard to do worse than Bush. We can only go up from here.
PS John, I like that. "Bushed" has just been added to my dictionary. After the last few years of George it has been given a very definitive connotation.

SLRM, Quatro, It seems that every generation worries about and thinks the next generation is hopeless. We were a minority in our generation, and the next generation has about the same percentage of techno weenies (that's us) as ours did. I see them on this forum (I'm 1011 is one) and at the science fairs when my kids were in high school. Some of the projects I saw there were pretty impressive for that age group.

kwinn, please bear in mind that this is not about freedom of speech or cencorship. This is a Technical Support forum. While we do have the sandbox for discussion off topic from the other specific areas, these forums aren't really the place for such discussion. Our members come here primarily for Technical Support with their Parallax products or to share in project/code/technology that can benefit everyone.

I will also be the first to admit that to some I may seem a bit tough on such things. If it were another forum admin perhaps this would not be an issue. I am doing what I think is best based on my experience on these forums. This is the same as getting pulled over by a police officer for speeding. You might get an officer who gives you a warning or you might get one who gives you a ticket. I guess I am the one who gives the ticket. At the same time I have tried to make sure that every·member who posts here is getting the help they need.· =) Thank you for your understanding.

While I was admin I too would squelch such conversations, it's just that Chris beat me to the punch most of the time. In regards to the individual, free speech only pertains to·discourse in a public forum (the broad definition of the word, not the narrow internet forum definition) and doesn't apply to privately held entities such as these forums. For instance the New York Times is free to print whatever it chooses (so long as its not libel or slander), however this doesn't mean I have the right to go into thier office and force them to print something I want printed in thier newspaper. There are plenty of online venues to express political opinions, this just isn't one of them.

Think about it Chris and Paul
I doubt you’ll have much argument from forum members. Indulge the members. The people on this site are ALL technical savvy, above average intelligence, amazingly helpful, generally very accepting and middle class. The exit polls showed that those types of people voted just one way…··tongue.gif··
Well done America, now the hard work begins.· (Remember that you are the engine for the world economy, it’s time to rev it up)·· jumpin.gif

Think about it John Bond, not everybody voted for BO! If this persists, then I am sure that I could find a another place where electronics is discussed, and not politicized.

Yeah, I have to agree with Chris Savage: we shouldn't be talking politics here. I guess even my own comments about the economy (which for me is like talking about the weather, over which no one has any real control) have political implications. Sorry about that. And to Mr. Bond, the US is incredibly divided over politics, and for the most part, on both sides of the fence, the preferences seem to be more emotionally based rather than anything else, so no matter what you say you're bound to light somebody's fuze. It's really not safe to assume what a particular group of people is going to think about these things. If anybody really wants to vent particular views about politics, etc. then I'd suggest going to forums like FoxNews.com, CNN.com, or just google "politics" and "forums" and surrender to the Infinite Jest of it all.

@ ElectricAye
And Rsadeika (are you one of the Sadeikas from Pennsylvania)

I apologise!!!

I apologise for poking fun at the US voter, yes voting is a serious and important obligation. Most educated South Africans followed the US poll quite closely, coming to grips with the issues and platforms of ALL the candidates. Perhaps because we were further away from the hype, we got a better view than some US voters did. (It may supprise you that many people living outside the USA have a fairly good grasp of US history, politics, economics or technology. For example, two of my favourite people from history are Robert E Lee and Abe Lincoln. I’ve been watching the US SEC squirm over Madoff . I probably know more than most people do about Chrysler’s restructuring)

To put this back on a light hearted note, we in South Africa are coming up for presidential elections. The radio announced on Tuesday that campaigning in my area had been trouble free. Only three political party officials had been murdered. The police said that ONLY two of the murders were politically motivated and the third was probably gang related (Ouch). We are just dying to vote for our chosen candidate.
