bluetooth and AT commands

I'm looking for product advice on using bluetooth to send AT commands to a cell phone for remote control and sensing operations.
I've had good luck with a Telit gm862... but it is a pain to program and somewhat expensive. A better long term solution would be to find or create an "open source" method to drive a cell phone with a Propeller.
(The Propeller is used to collect the data and generate the AT commands...)
I'm an idiot... so easy of use and completeness of documentation are important.
