SRAM to NVRAM

Hi,
for a while I have been looking for a nice solution involving NVRAM but...it is too much expensive.....
I was thinking of using some SRAM and pair a rechargable battery to keep the SRAM chips powered. Since I am not really a tech-guru I was wondering:
The chip I have in mind for SRAM is CY7C1019DV33-10ZSXI

1) do you have any suggestion?
2) do you know if anyone else have tried already....I would like to see some reference material....

Thanks!!!
Nicola

Another option to standard NVRAM chips are the ones made by SIMTEK. They have some drop in replacements for popular SRAM chips and so far they seem to work great in the projects I have used them in. You can check them out at:

I was looking for a cheap solution. I couldn't find the price for those you guys have mentioned.
At the beginning I was going to use that memory just as video memory then Ithought that it would be great not to lose the info I have stored in.
    Thanks for your sugestions

A small battery and a couple of diodes should be all you need to retain data on this chip. The info required is on the data sheet.

Robert, this is the board with SIMTEK chip used in the system. To activate Write command on Power Down (OFF) the HSB and W pin must go low and if the writing is not performed the SIMTEK chip is bad? In case the pin W is not activated to correct state by NEC chip is it possible to bypass it and unsolder pin W which is 27 from the board and make a pull up by 10k resistor to +5V DC and force the writing to eeprom?

    The problem has been fixed.
Apparently SIMTEK chip was damaged and after replacement the device is working as before.
