help in maze please

please please please I neeeeed your help in finding a method to map a maze
I tried to use arrays to store the paths and then take the shortest path, but it didn't work
I need it to complete my project
so can anyone explain to me in details how can I implement the mapping

Also if have a question,

I have a path which is line then triangle then octagon.
I have 9 optical sensors and i want to arrange them in a way that they can recognize each shape i go through

Can you expand on your robot very much? If so, I would advise using a servo to move the sensors, giving you better mapping capabilities. Also, if you are using ir, you can play with the ir frequencies to find distances. As for the layout that would work best-I'm not sure. However, I've seen robots with maybe 20+ ir sensors in a circle on the top to give 360 degree vision without having to use a servo or anything else to move the sensors.
