? Protocl for citing the previous work of others and sites for further info ?

Hello,

I was getting ready to polish off and post a couple of applications I've done.· Admittedly, I'm in the learning curve, so I am depending heavily on altering the work of others to my application.·

I understand that the "Forum" discourages outside links (as they often have commercials, etc.)· However, as I have appropriated the work of others, I feel a certain need to cite the work which I've borrowed (these are open source / sourceforge / etc. which all encourage experimenting and changing their code).

Example, For the Serial Port part of what I want to do, I am using Python with the PySerial Extension .· Specifically, the SVN has some sample programs,· So I would like to say that my work used the PySerial Module http://pyserial.wiki.sourceforge.net/pySerial·and depended heavily on altering the sample programs available at http://pyserial.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/pyserial/trunk/pyserial/examples/·and using information gained from another project within the Parallax Forums (and of course give the URL).

Is this acceptable ?

    Bdb,

External links aren’t discouraged on the forums…unless they’re offensive or off topic in the forum they are in. About the only other time they become a problem is in the Complete Projects Forum when a post reads something like:

“Hello, here is my cool project I made. Click the link below to see it”

When there is no other content except a link I myself would consider the post off topic because it isn’t a completed project if there’s nothing there but a quick description and a link too all the information. On the other hand if in the course of describing your project you list links to the manufacturers or references you used that is great. Just include pictures, schematics and code and you’re set!
