Sick day synthesizer

I took a sick day today *cough* and made a CHAD polyphonic synthesizer out of a prop. Emphasis on the CH. And on the D.

I hooked up this MIDI IN circuit: http://forums.parallax.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49850 (from this thread: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=682346)

Then I whipped up the attached program (requires NS_sound_drv_052_11khz_16bit.spin from the HYDRA CD), plugged in my MIDI keyboard, and shot some video of our cat: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyQJOUHT1-g (YouTube is still processing as I type this; hopefully it'll be done by the time you click.)

The sound quality is nothing to write home about, but it is polyphonic and velocity-sensitive. Anyway, it was more fun than just lying in bed... though lying down sounds like a pretty good idea right about now.

That actually sounds good. Though I'm also a huge fan of 8-bit music, so there ya go.

Just out of curiosity, is the heavy attack on some notes the Prop or your camera?

Probably just me hitting the durn keys too hard. Velocity-sensitivity is a double-edged sword.

    Mpark...

Good to hear of your recent illness... best wishes for a belated recovery. It is scary to think what you could do with a week off.

Gastro-enteritis is going around... it is good for at least a week and nobody wants you around when you have it... it sometimes develops about five days after an upper respiratory infection.

    How about a Karaoke machine?

Sounds better than the NoiseAxe that Grandtippler put up! Dumb question - what's CHAD?

    Most likely he's referring to:
    * Roland Juno-60 - The Roland Juno-60 is a popular analogue 61-key polyphonic synthesizer produced by … Notable Juno-60 : Chad Coles (during his earlier years) …

    I highly recommend it!

Btw, CHAD = cheap and dirty. I guess it's a model rocketry thing. I thought it was more widespread, but maybe not.

Anyway, it's my unofficial motto :)

I like it as well (also a fan of 8-bit music... must be a few of those around the forums).

Have to admit though that when I saw the post title ("Sick Day Synthesizer"), it brought a picture to my mind of the scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off where he sets up the synthesizer to sound like him being sick.· That would be a good project too ;)

Sorry, uk7Of9, for that driver you'll have to buy the Hydra book. It's worth it, though.

I've started work on a completely different sound driver. Follow my latest exploits here: http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=777004.

The code from the book is online now:
    www.parallax.com/Portals/0/Downloads/sw/HYDRASourceCodeDemos.zip

Though I'll probably still buy the book.
