Is a sx light controller possible

HI all
I am thinking about going from the bs2 to the SX for my christmas display next year.
But i am trying to be sure everything will work first.
So my question is, will it be possible to have the 20 pin sx, monitor a serial line in the background while it monitors a zero voltage detector and then uses that information to independantly dimm 18 light channels?

Sorry to post across forums, i started out showing what i did this year in completed projects and now i need the SX experience in my planning for next year.
