I just got started programming the SX, but when I tried I got·an error·message. I tried doing as it said and searching for the COM port options, but·it wasn't available. What is wrong?
- Are you using the new USB SX-Key, older Serial SX-Key, or the SX-Blitz programmer?
- If you are using the Serial SX-Key is it connected directly to a serial port or are you going through a USB to Serial adapter?
- If you are using the Serial SX-Key is the target device powered? The Serial SX-Key gets its power from the target being programmed.
- What is the board you are trying to program? Is it a Parallax development board or something home grown?
- What OS are you running on the system? Do you have any Virus scanners that may be blocking access to Serial ports?
- Although unlikely is the SX-Key plugged in backwards on the 4-pin header for programming?
- What is the clock source for your target system? Is it going to use the internal RC clock, a resonator, or a crystal? If you have a crystal as a clock source the crystal must be unplugged or you can't program the chip. If it is in the circuit it may also damage the SX-Key
- If there is a resonator in the circuit you should be able to program the chip but you can't debug. In order to debug all the clock sources other than the SX-Key must be disconnected.
Yup, the crystal was in the circuit. Once I took it out I could find the option to use COM 7, but now all the programmer does is turn on a blue light. Guess I'll have to replace it then.

Let us know and we should be able to help.

If you go to Run in the Toolbar and select Configure from the drop-down menu you'll see the "radio buttons" for available serial ports.·
The USB-serial has to be plugged in before you run the SX IDE, it looks for what's out there when it boots but doesn't check again afterward.
