Dryer Capacitor

My clothes dryer has trouble starting to turn, but will start to turn if I help it with my hand.
I suspect my dryer's cylindrical capacitor is faulty. I think it could be an oil based capacitor.

Can I change it to a square X2 metalized film capacitor? ( i have a lot of these ).
Will it last longer than the oil capacitor?

Thanks.

It does sound like the Motors starter capacitor has failed, though i'm not sure of what electrical regulations you have in the country you live in i'd be tempted to replace like for like as otherwise you will have "modified the design" and whatever legalities that may lead to in the future such as an insurance claim.

    NO

To this if it is a Start Cap you MUST USE A START CAP TYPE ONLY

If mfd value is over 15 then it·most likely·a start cap ·

One way to tell if it a Start Cap the mfd value will be something like 50 to 80 mfd or more also it may have bleed down resister on it as well

You want to make sure that the cap that you use are

    These are a MUST

    ONE····· the same mfd value
TWO···· the same voltage value or greater···
THREE···that it is for AC current· meaning that they are for AC·Motors

Make sure that you mount the cap to the frame of the motor if you can
also use a terminal cap protector.......>>>>>
(>>>>This is a rubber cap that goes over the terminal of the cap<<<<<<)·
....... This is a must do as well

I have done many time before with very good results

    Keeping this in mind

    skylight
.................otherwise you will have "modified the design" and whatever legalities that may lead to in the future such as an insurance claim.

As long as these values are meet it should work

    I hope this helps
