The Wiki

Just a thought.

I've noticed a lot of really great information posted here in various threads gets asked for again and again.
Obviously it's not as easy to search for this stuff as it might be or else people would not keep asking the same questions over and over.

We have a great wiki available that is user editable. Would it be too much to ask for people who post great information (and this link is the one that triggered my thought http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=771712) to post a link to the source or the forum post in a "great links" or "FAQ" page on the wiki?

Alternatively, we have a sticky here already that seems incredibly under-utilised.
http://forums.parallax.com/showthread.php?p=663638

There are a _lot_ of fantastic forum posts here that explain a lot of the really great aspects of the propeller and associated tools. I was just thinking if we had a FAQ sticky up the top that pointed to a Wiki page outside the forums, people could search the FAQ first (and add to it when they ask a question that had not been previously answered).

Graham Stabler was/is doing a brilliant job at maintaining a "Good Thread" index, but the problem being only he can edit the index post. If we used the Wiki a bit more, those people posting useful info could add it to the page and make it nice and easy to index for people searching.

Just a thought...
(Or perhaps I'm just being hopeful about the persistence and resourcefulness of people searching. Maybe I have the wrong end of the cat)

PS. Come back DeSilva and visit more often Hippy.
Merry Christmas all.. aside from a post later this evening, I'll be disconnected for a week.

Yep, that is something that has bothered me about most forums. You know that somewhere in there is that perfect gem of information that would answer your question, but where ? Often buried deep as an off topic remark in some totally unrelated thread.

My solution is to have a serious enthusiast who reads every post and sucks out those gems subsequently compiling them into an on line book. Any volunteers ? :)

And yes, where are those guys ?

    Merry Christmas.

    @BradC

Good call for use of the Wiki.. The only reason I didn't used the Wiki for the
"Software Index" is wanted something that could be downloaded/printer friendly.

Those who have things could also help by posting a link your .sig. I can't tell
you how many times I've had to figure out where Ray's Logic pages and others
were because they don't like to toot their own horns. We appreciate the attitude
guys, but if you take the time to create good information, please publicize it!

I use multiple computers so simple bookmarks just don't get it done. :)

BradC, we're gonna miss you while you are away, safe journey my friend.

When I started on this forum I didn't know much about forums or wiki's.
However, now on principle I will not use the wiki as it is being commercially censored in some areas and there is nowhere to complain to.

The prop forum should be the place at least to find it's own threads, but that is definately NOT the case. I have asked numerous times for a sticky pointer that we could maintain ourselves, but to no avail.

OBC's it the best that anyone seems to have come up with, but I cannot get my sig to work properly and barring any further ideas have given up.

I'm curious about this statement. What is it that is being edited, and or by whom?

I guess It's not fair to ask for names, but a general idea of what you think is being edited.

I don't spend a lot of time looking at it, and even less time editing it myself, but I haven't noticed any obvious agenda being pushed on the Wiki.

I was banned from wikipedia because (I'm making an educated guess here...) my email address is srlm_productions, and they thought I was putting biased stuff up. All that it was was an article on sawmills... I guess I could use another one, but it's a hassle. Maybe for the propeller.

Some people don't like Wikis, for some reason. Microchip has one for their products but very few people use it, compared to their forums. Perhaps they prefer the personal contact offered by forums, Wikis tend to rather impersonal.

Obvious omission from this thread so far, this is the prop wiki being talked about:

    http://propeller.wikispaces.com

I recently was trying to find Chip's post of the bootloader/interpreter code. I can't believe how long it took me to find it. I think one of the problems is that is that search.parallax.com titles everything "Parallax Forums", which is absolutely useless.

My gripe with the Wiki is not about the Propeller Wiki, but about a charity that needs to be exposed. My posts were deleted within 5 minutes and they were accreditted sources, including a link to a TV current affairs link, and internal correspondence within the charity. I tried to complain but got nowhere.
So, I won't use the Wiki because it is deliberately not factual.
Sorry, but no further discussion here. :-(

Again I wish to point to cmapspublic3.ihmc.us/servlet/SBReadResourceServlet?rid=1181572927203_421963583_5511&partName=htmltext These maps I create with cmap tools and the folder parallax on the public server should no be open to everybody. These maps can be used as a directory and can be fully meshed, also to external resources. My wish for christmas: may someone join the cmapparty!
