Source for 3x4 and 3x3 plated through proto boards

I need help locating a source of blank 3x4 inch and 3x3 inch PCB (proto boards) with 0.1 x 0.1 spaced plated through holes, so soldering can be done on both sides.· Ideally the corner mounting holes should match up with the Parallax 3x4 propeller Proto Board.··I would like to stack the prop proto board on top, using nylon spacers and long bolts, etc, with maybe a 4x20 serial LCD above, to give a·professional look to my projects.· Adding a plastic box with cutout on the side for jacks and connectors would give it a·finished look.

All the best,

Eric

Radio Shack used to sell proto boards in that size range but they were not plated through. If you don't
If you take a file and score the board along the holes it will break right alone a line of holes so sizing them is pretty easy.

You're describing·experimenter/prototyping board.· But you'll have to cut your blanks from a larger piece of stock (pretty easy with a Dremel cutting wheel, a coping saw, or a hack saw.)

    For example -- http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=438-1022-ND

    PTH - plated-thru holes

I like the type with a ground-plane on one side, no point-to-pointing ground connections.· Much better.

Thanks for your responses to my post.

I have been using Radio shack boards, but I want to solder connectors and components on both sides.

PJ, question: how do you get to the ground plane when mounting components, is the ground plane exposed or covered with insulating material?

I sure would be neat if a production board could be found.·· Also, trying to get a even cut.

Parallax should offer them, they would sell a lot of them.

    All the best,

    Eric

The pads on one side are surrounded by the ground plane, while keeping the pads isolated.· It's good stuff.

A forum member, "Nick McClick" offers his 'Gadget Gangster' boards, too, which look very nice.· That's pretty easy to find over in 'The Sandbox'.

    PJ,

I order some boards from 'Gadget Gangster' .· I don,t think they have plated thu holes but give them a try.

I'll try digikey, when I have a bunch of other items to order from them.

    Again, all the best,

    They do have PTH.

If I were you I'd design some boards that did exactly what you want and get a few made, they won't be expensive. You can flog the extra at a small profit and get yours free. 8-)

    Leon or Eric,
If you decide to have a batch of the PTH boards made, please let me know, I have a co-worker who has been raving about them forever... And I would buy some to have, and am sure he will to.

Sparkfun carries a few different types of PTH proto boards: www.sparkfun.com/commerce/categories.php?c=149.

This one looks almost the size you want (3.15x3.94"): www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8619

Getting some made has the advantage that the size could be the same as the Propeller Proto board, and the mounting holes and component holes could be made to match up exactly, making it very easy to stack them and make neat connections between them.

    Harrison,

I forgot to check Sparkfun.· I have bought from them before.

    Leon,

I'm in the process of learning to program Eagle PCB software, their Eagle Lite program in free to use, there is a limit to board size and only two sides.· Also, sparkfun's BatchPCB.com website can be used to have small quanities of boards made.·

    TJHJ,

I don,t have a time frame now, to have a generic board built.· I may have a special prototype board built for a project I'm working on now.

    Thanks for all the comments.

    All the best,

P.S.: I'm programming in C now, using ICCV7 for the Propeller by ImageCraft.· I have a demo.c program developed for the·Parallax serial 4x20 LCD, with support for 2x16.· It hasn't been totally reviewed, so I haven't submitted·to the Parallax's object libruary.· C is easy to use and have found it better than spin, I converted a·project which was done in Spin last year over to C.· If some one wants to look it over and comment, send me am email, erok@korellc.com. and I'll send it to you.

    Hey Eric!

Just found this post - I put your order in the mail last night. They are Plated Through Holes, they have mounting holes for spacers, too. They're a perfect fit for the protoboard. I also sent you halfboards, which will mount on top of the fullboard.

They have some additional features, which are detailed here. I also have a decent photo of the board, here.

I also send out a 4-pack of boards to anyone who signs up, free. I hope you'll use the boards to share a project on Gadget Gangster, but that's up to you.

Let me know how you like the boards!

    Nick

    Eric,
See Chucks' $8 dollar 4.000 x 3.050" board with 1101 plated thru holes that matches the Parallax Propeller Proto Board's (and the BSBE or JSDB board as well)

These run about 1/2 the cost of a medium run of boards at ExpressPCB and are a nice green color.

Eric, Depending on how many you want, I might be able to get you a BUNCH of them for dirty cheap. Like around $3 a board. Let me know.

EDIT: These are double sided, but·silkscreened on one side.

I was looking at BatchPCB's (from sparkfun) prices and they list $10 setup and $2.50 a square inch (for two layer) boards. Is this a reasonable price compared to other sources?

WOW! No, I don't think so at all, SRLM. I've done ALOT of PCB shopping, and $2.50/inch is pretty horrible... On my next go around, I'm going to use another company, instead of futurlec like I did last time. Even futurlec is about $0.65/inch, plus a $15 setup.

Eric, I looked into it further. I think 50 boards(3"x4", plated through hole, double sided, silkscreen), can actually be done for about $4.50/each, total. Maybe $5...

BatchPCB is the cheapest price I've found for ONE board. If you need more boards other board houses have better prices. (If you need a whole panel GoldPhenix is said to be good, BatchPCB sources from them) I've also used www.4pcb.com when I need boards fast. They have a well hidden bare-bones spec that's reasonable cost.

    You might check out this

    www.mountainkingtech.com/

This guy apparently makes enclosures and protoboards that are specifically designed for the Protoboard. Click on New Product for the proto board. Looks like he's out of town until March 7, though.

    have fun,

    Everyone,

··· Just an FYI, these 4.00x3.05 boards from chuck at www.mountainkingtech.com fit the propeller proto boards exactly with both standoff and plated through holes lining up, allowing them to be stacked on top of the parallax boards - see attached photos.· I just received a batch of boards today, the site is down, I was in email contact with him last week, I am sure the site will be back up when he returns on the 21st.

···· I was referred to this off-site vendor by the PPDB page at Parallax at...

    http://www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/PropellerDevelopmentBoards/tabid/514/CategoryID/73/List/0/Level/a/ProductID/515/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName%2cProductName

    ··· thank you
