IR Receiver

Hi,
I was doing some test to learn how to interact with IR receiver. I used a spare part I had home pulled out a DVD unit but I got no result.
I was thinking to buy one from radioshack http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049727... do you know if it works like the one sold on parallax store?
If I have understood correctly there are receivers that will translate the signal from the emitter in a easy readable signal for the propeller and other receiver that do not do that.
It is not clear to me how the part sold by radioshack works.
Probably I am not an expert in IR receivers :) :) :) :)
Thanks
Nicola

This IR detector contains a phototransistor to detect the light, an amplifier, filter, limiter, and comparator to produce an on/off signal at a threshold. Look at the documentation on Parallax's site (www.parallax.com/Portals/0/Downloads/docs/prod/audiovis/PNA4601M.pdf)
